CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: VIVA ELVIS

Anyone who's been to Vegas will recognise the many billboards advertising shows by the Cirque du Soleil. At any one time, this company can have four or five shows playing to more than 9,000 people a night. Truly amazing stuff. A couple of years ago I had the chance to see their newest production Love that was inspired by and featured the music of The Beatles. And they spared no expense. $100 million it was reported to have cost the Mirage to fit out a new theatre. A bit excessive? Well, you shoulda seen the show. Both visually and audibly, it rates among the greatest pieces of live entertainment I've ever had the chance to experience. Right up there with Cats, Phantom of the Opera, and Motley Crue's 'Carnival of Sins'. It was bullshit!

Earlier this year, Cirque du Soleil unveiled their second salute to rock music with Viva Elvis. The official website calls the show 'a tribute to the life and music of Elvis Presley'. I hadn't heard too much about it 'til now (the soundtrack was released early November) so I decided to have a hunt around for some YouTube vids and get a taste of the show. As a big fan of Elvis, I'm happy to say that this Cirque production looks to be right on par with Love. If you're near Las Vegas any time soon, you'd be crazy not to check it out. This is the closest we will ever come to seeing Elvis Presley perform in the flesh.

'Suspicious Minds' still brings a tear to my eye. Every time.
