Now that I've completed watching the first season of Game of Thrones, I'm happy to admit that it was the best new show of 2011. I had my doubts, having never read the books and feeling a little exhausted of the fantasy genre after years devoted to Middle Earth and Hogwart's. How wrong of me to judge a book by its cover. In typical HBO fashion, this show is richly layered with multiple story lines and authentic performances, comparable in many ways to a classic like Deadwood. This isn't fantasy so much as it is drama, high-stakes drama. The casting is spot on. And unlike some of HBO's previous fare, Game of Thrones requires no warming up. You'll be thrust into the story and hooked from episode one.
Character to watch out for: Arya Stark.
